Frequently asked questions
Chameleon is under active development. Here are answers to common questions about how things work and how to get help.
Getting help
What do I do if my journal isn't listed?
We're adding journals regularly. Use the feedback button in the app to request a journal and we'll prioritise based on demand. Include the full journal name and a link to their author guidelines if you have it.
What if a check is missing that I need?
Let us know through the feedback button. Describe what formatting requirement you need checked and which journal requires it. We use this feedback to prioritise new checks.
What if a check isn't working correctly?
Please report it using the feedback button. Include details about what the check flagged (or missed), and what you expected to happen. If you can share the relevant part of your document, that helps us investigate faster.
How can I request a new feature?
The feedback button is your friend. Tell us what you're trying to accomplish and we'll consider it for our roadmap. You can also check our roadmap to see what's already planned.
How do I report a bug?
Use the feedback button and describe what went wrong. Include what you were doing when it happened, any error messages you saw, and your browser if relevant. We investigate all reports.
How Chameleon works
What file formats are supported?
Currently we support Microsoft Word documents (.docx). This is the format most journals require for submission. We're exploring support for other formats based on user demand.
What parts of my document does Chameleon check?
Chameleon checks formatting elements like word counts, paragraph spacing, font usage, reference formatting, and other style requirements. The specific checks depend on your selected journal. We focus on the things that commonly cause desk rejections.
Will Chameleon change the content of my manuscript?
No. Chameleon only addresses formatting issues like spacing, indentation, and number formatting. We never modify your text, research findings, or any substantive content. Your words remain exactly as you wrote them.
How accurate are the checks?
We aim for high accuracy but no automated tool is perfect. Journal guidelines can be ambiguous or change without notice. Chameleon helps catch common issues but isn't a guarantee of acceptance. Always review the results and use your judgement.
Does Chameleon guarantee my manuscript will be accepted?
No. Chameleon helps with formatting compliance, which is just one part of the submission process. Editorial decisions depend on many factors including scientific merit, scope, and reviewer feedback. We help you avoid desk rejections for formatting issues.
How often are journal requirements updated?
We review and update journal requirements regularly. If you notice a requirement has changed, please let us know through the feedback button so we can update it promptly.
Trust and privacy
What happens to my document after I upload it?
Your document is processed in memory only. We don't store your document contents on disk. Once processing is complete, the document is no longer retained. See our security page for full details.
Is my document stored or shared with anyone?
No. We don't store your document contents and we never share them with third parties. We only retain minimal metadata (like filenames and timestamps) to power features like your usage history.
Is my data secure?
Yes. We follow industry security standards including ISO 27001-aligned practices. All data is encrypted in transit. For more details, see our security page.
Who is behind Chameleon?
Chameleon is built by a small team with experience in medical communications and academic publishing. We understand the pain of manuscript formatting because we've lived it ourselves.
Account and usage
Is Chameleon free to use?
We're currently in early development and offering generous free usage to early adopters. Sign up now to get a large allocation of free checks while we build out the product. Pricing for future usage is still being finalised.
Do I need to create an account?
An account lets you track your document history and access all features. We're exploring options for limited anonymous usage in the future.
What browsers are supported?
Chameleon works in modern browsers including Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge. For the best experience, we recommend keeping your browser up to date.
Can I use Chameleon for multiple journals at once?
Currently you check one journal at a time. If you're considering multiple target journals, run separate checks for each to see the specific requirements.
